Everyone is Beautiful by Katherine Center

Wow. I can't remember the last time a book totally took hold of me like Katherine Center's "Everyone is Beautiful." I got it at the library on Tuesday, and finished it last night in between watching So You Think You Can Dance. I'd had the book on hold ever since I heard that 5 Minutes for Books was doing a book club on it, and they couldn't say enough nice things about the book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I could totally relate to the main character, Lanie, who wakes up much like the Talking Heads song "Once in a Lifetime" - not really recognizing who she's become through four years of motherhood and three very crazy little boys, who happen to be obsessed with their penises (yikes, is that what's in store for me??). I think most of us moms can relate to that - motherhood changes you so profoundly that you can't possibly be the same person who were before you were a mother. It's just not possible.

Anyway, the story is Lanie's journey to find herself again, and it's a beautiful one at that. I couldn't read it fast enough - I just wanted to know what was going to happen to her, and I cared so deeply about some of the characters in the story. Part of me didn't want the story to end.

This is a book I definitely, definitely recommend, and I will probably pick it up for my bookshelf when it comes out in paperback so I can re-read it. Two thumbs up!

Wow, did you see that?? The author commented on my blog!!! Wow. That's never happened before. BTW, I forgot to mention this in my post, but I also really loved her first book, "The Bright Side of Disaster," which I read last summer, when Baby was a few months old - it was also a very, very good read, but I think "Everyone is Beautiful" is maybe just a smidge better. :)

I would love to have you join us. Like I said...it's kind of a contest but more importantly it's a support network. I tell my sisters all the time that they need to watch themselves and I don't think they believe me about the weight...they are 'young and invincible' so to speak. I hope that by doing this (and putting those dreadful pictures on the net) that I'll be able to help some people who wouldn't otherwise give it any consideration.
